Lunchbox foods to boost kids’ brain power

By Michelle Edelbaum, EatingWell Web Editor

As the proud lunch-packing parent in my family's house, I have two goals: to pack food that nourishes my son's body and mind and to make food that he’ll be excited about eating (instead of pining after his friends’ icing-covered cookies and bringing home uneaten the food I so lovingly prepared). Luckily for this busy mom it’s possible to do both.
When it comes to boosting brain power, there are some foods and nutrients that science shows have an edge for keeping kids sharp and fueled for the day. I make sure I’ve got my bases covered by packing some of these brain-boosting foods every day, using the healthy kids recipe ideas below. Happy packing!

Omega-3-Rich Foods—DHA and EPA, two types of omega-3 fatty acids, are important for brain development and are associated with lower risk of depression and better mood, the expression of emotion and concentration, says Rachael Moeller Gorman in EatingWell Magazine. Omega-3 fatty acids are found mainly in fatty fish like salmon, though they can be made by the body in small amounts from ALA, another type of omega-3 that’s found in plants like flaxseed, walnuts, canola oil and soy. A variety of food, including soymilks and breakfast bars, are now fortified with DHA. Supplements of DHA/EPA made from algae are available. A good target for kids who eat about 1,000 calories/day is 400-500 mg/day of omega-3s, says Joe Hibbeln, M.D. Acting Chief, Section on Nutritional Neuroscience at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Here are some lunch-box friendly sources of omega-3 fats (I like to sometimes pack salmon salad instead of tuna salad for variety. You can find canned wild salmon next to other canned fish in the supermarket.)  More...Shine from yahoo

How to Cut Through Food Label Hype

Deciding what health claims are accurate is a tall order—even for scientists, courts, and government agencies. Here’s how to make sense of it all

Ever feel like the boxes lined up on grocery store shelves are conspiring to trick you? You’re not alone. Despite consumer lawsuits and government action, food companies still try to bend the rules to make labels that will catch your eye—and grab your grocery dollars.

On Aug 29, a California district court will hear a class action complaint against Nutella, the chocolaty hazelnut condiment. The complaint seeks damages for the Nutella label’s allegedly misleading claim that it can be part of "a tasty yet balanced breakfast" and counters that it “contains 70% saturated fat [mostly from palm oil] and processed sugar by weight.”  More....Shine from yahoo

5 Mistakes Parents Make When Feeding their Kids

By Tanya Steel, Epicurious.com

Every day I hear about tremendous strides in the fight to combat childhood obesity, but for every pound we lose, we seem to gain two back. Here are five common mistakes parents make on a daily basis with their children's diets and how they can take a few simple steps to ensure their children will live a long healthy life.

Liquid Lunches, Dinners, and Snacks: The amount of empty calories consumed in the form of sodas, diet or otherwise, and fruit juice, is enormous. One 12-ounce can of Coke is 155 calories, so if your child has two a day, that adds up to almost a quarter of his or her recommended daily calorie intake. Snapple and fruit juices may be natural, but they often contain even more calories than soda. Serve them only water, skim milk, unsweetened teas, and sparkling waters with fruit slices.  More... 3 Funky things you didn’t know about sweat

Any woman who's ever reached for a glass of wine on a date only to reveal the soaked underarms of her outfit has probably wished she could remove her sweat glands. But long before pit stains became a social obstacle, perspiring was crucial to survival. "Sweat cooled off our ancestors in the grasslands of Africa," says anthropologist Helen Fisher, Ph.D. "It allowed them to hunt and forage without sweltering."

But a hot climate isn't the only thing that makes us sweat. Nerve-racking situations (e.g., a big job interview) can prompt the brain to trigger the release of stress hormones that raise your body's temperature enough to warrant a cooldown.

Here, three funky facts from the science of sweat.  More...Shine from yahoo

The body is an excellent communicator, and often the messages are obvious: Red skin means you've had too much sun; a rumbling stomach means you're running out of fuel. But many other distress signals are less well known. Take a few moments to give yourself a quick check for these surprising warning signs.

9 Ways to flatten your belly in one week

Another reason to hate Mondays? Tight post-weekend waistbands. Unless you spent the past 2 days living like a monk, the cocktails, movie snacks, and dinners out can all add up to one thing: belly bloat.

“If you wake up bloated on Monday morning, your weekend food choices are likely to blame,” explains Keri Gans, RD, author of The Small Change Diet. “In fact, overindulging for two days straight can easily cause a gain of three pounds. Fortunately, this weight gain is usually temporary and easy to get rid of in less than a week.”  More...Yahoo health

6 Ways Lack of Sleep is Costing You a Fortune

Sleep deprivation is never a fun thing to deal with. Feeling groggy when going about your day can make it less enjoyable and productive.
More Accident-Prone
Driving sleep deprived can be as dangerous as driving drunk. Anywhere from 16 percent to 60 percent of car accidents involve a sleep-deprived driver, and 30 to 40 percent of all heavy truck accidents are caused by fatigue. Additionally, if you haven't gotten enough sleep, chances are you are going to be a bit clumsier than normal, resulting in a higher probability of having an accident doing routine tasks around the home or office.
Increased Medical Expenses
People who don't get enough sleep are more likely to have health issues. People who don't get enough sleep are 15 percent more likely to have a stroke and 48 percent more likely to develop or pass away from heart disease. Additionally, people who sleep four hours or less each night have a 75 percent higher chance of being obese due to the fact that sleep deprivation can affect appetite hormones.
Bad Financial Decision Making
If you're tired, chances are you are more likely to make risky decisions. When you don't get enough sleep, you don't have as much dopamine in your system, which alters your decision-making skills. Sleep deprivation causes people to restrict their choices to decisions that promise bigger gains, which aren't always the best ways to accomplish positive results. In relation to your finances, this means that lack of sleep can alter the way you make financial decisions, causing you to make more risky gambles with your finances than you normally would.  More....Yahoo Finance

Poll: Obesity hits more boomers than others in US

WASHINGTON (AP) — Cancer and memory loss are baby boomers' biggest health fears. Given their weight, maybe heart disease and diabetes should be.
Boomers are more obese than other generations, a new poll finds, setting them up for unhealthy senior years.
And for all the talk of "60 is the new 50" and active aging, even those who aren't obese need to do more to stay fit, according to the Associated Press-LifeGoesStrong.com poll.
Most baby boomers say they get some aerobic exercise, the kind that revs up your heart rate, at least once a week. But most adults are supposed to get 2½ hours a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity — things like a brisk walk, a dance class, pushing a lawn mower. Only about a quarter of boomers polled report working up a sweat four or five times a week, what the average person needs to reach that goal.
Worse, 37 percent never do any of the strength training so crucial to fighting the muscle loss that comes with aging.  More... Yahoo news

Weight Loss May Boost Sex Life of Obese, Diabetic Men

FRIDAY, Aug. 5 (HealthDay News) -- Weight loss improves the sexual health of obese men with type 2 diabetes, a new study finds.
Australian researchers placed 31 obese men with type 2 diabetes on either a meal replacement-based low-calorie diet or a low-fat, high-protein, reduced-carbohydrate diet meant to decrease calorie intake by 600 calories a day.
A modest weight loss of 5 percent led to an easing of erectile dysfunction and improved sexual desire within eight weeks, and these improvements continued for 12 months, according to the study published Aug. 5 in The Journal of Sexual Medicine. Problems with urinary tract function also improved, the team added.
"Our findings are consistent with the evidence that not only erectile function, but also lower urinary tract symptoms are a marker of cardio-metabolic risk," noted Gary Wittert, of the University of Adelaide, in a journal news release.
The findings support previous research showing that lifestyle changes can have a positive effect on sexual function, according to journal editor-in-chief Irwin Goldstein.  More....Yahoo news

High-Fiber Diet Might Lower Risk for Colon Polyps

TUESDAY, Aug. 9 (HealthDay News) -- People who regularly eat legumes, brown rice, cooked green vegetables and dried fruit have a reduced risk of colon polyps, a precursor to colon cancer.
That's the finding of California researchers who analyzed data from 2,818 people who were followed for 26 years. During that time, 441 cases of rectal/colon polyps were detected among the participants.
The risk of polyps was 40 percent lower among those who ate brown rice at least once a week and 33 percent lower among those who eat legumes (a class of vegetables that includes beans, peas and lentils) at least three times a week, the Loma Linda University team found.
Eating dried fruit three times or more a week, compared to less than once a week, was associated with a 26 percent reduced risk. Eating cooked green vegetables once a day or more, vs. less than five times a week, was associated with a 24 percent reduced risk, according to the report published online in the journal Nutrition and Cancer.
"Eating these foods is likely to decrease your risk for colon polyps, which would in turn decrease your risk for colon polyps," study author Dr. Yessenia Tantamango, a postdoctoral research fellow, said in a university news release.  More...Yahoo news

Nearly 100 children aged between five and seven in Britain have been treated for anorexia or bulimia in the past three years, according to figures released on Monday.
The statistics show that 197 children aged between five and nine were treated in hospital in England for eating disorders, fuelling campaigners' fears that young children are being influenced by photographs in celebrity magazines.
The figures from 35 hospitals showed 98 children were aged between five and seven at the time of treatment and 99 aged eight or nine. Almost 400 were between the ages of 10 and 12, with more than 1,500 between 13 and 15 years old.

Obesity Counseling Should Stress Brain, Not Willpower: Study

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 3 (HealthDay News) -- Obesity counseling should focus on neurobehavioral processes -- the ways the brain controls eating behavior in response to biological and environmental factors -- instead of personal choice and willpower, researchers suggest.
The team at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago outlines their new counseling approach in the August issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.
"Typically, overweight and obese patients receive education about dietary contributions to weight gain, and they are simply encouraged to fight the powerful urge to eat the delicious foods that are available almost everywhere in the environment, and instead, make dietary choices consistent with weight loss," lead author Brad Appelhans, a clinical psychologist and obesity researcher, said in a university news release.
"Yet, we know this approach rarely works. Even highly motivated and nutritionally informed patients struggle to refrain from highly palatable foods that are high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats," Appelhans continued.

Pumping Iron Helps Smokers Quit Without Weight Gain: Study

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 10 (HealthDay News) -- Would-be ex-smokers may want to try weight lifting to help them kick the habit for good, a new study suggests.
The researchers found that three months of pumping iron seemed to help curb cigarette cravings and withdrawal symptoms, while lessening the weight gain that sometimes accompanies quitting.
Overall, men and women who completed the resistance training program were twice as likely to kick the habit as smokers who didn't lift weights.
"Cigarette smoking kills more than a thousand Americans every day, and while the large majority of smokers want to quit, less than 5 percent are able to do it without help," the study's lead author, Joseph Ciccolo, an exercise psychologist with the Miriam Hospital's Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine, in Providence, said in a news release from the Lifespan health system.  More...Yahoo news

Sleep apnea linked to memory decline, dementia

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Older women who have sleep apnea may be more likely to develop memory problems and dementia, according to a new study.
It's not clear yet whether treating the sleep apnea can help prevent that memory decline -- but researchers say future studies should address that question.
"It makes sense that good sleep is going to be protective to the brain," said Dr. Robert Thomas, who studies sleep at Harvard Medical School in Boston and was not involved in the new study.
But, he added, clear answers have been lacking on the link between problem sleeping and memory. "We simply don't have data to answer many of the simple questions people may have in the sleep clinic," he told Reuters Health.  More....Yahoo news

How To Make Your Marriage Stronger.

Research has long shown that married people are generally healthier and live longer than unmarried people. Married people are less likely to get cancer and heart attacks, and have even been shown to be at lower risk for dementia. One study found married people to be much less likely to suffer from headaches, back pain, and psychological distress. They are also more active and less likely to smoke.
But while marriage is distinctively connected to health and wellbeing on paper, recent research has shown that this doesn’t extend to troubled couples. In fact, unhealthy relationships can have negative effects that far outweigh those faced by unmarried people. A 2005 study published in “The Archives of General Psychiatry” found that couples who experienced high levels of hostility were more susceptible to illness than happier couples. It has also been shown that unhappily married couples are more likely to experience chronic illness, heart attacks and high cholesterol.
While it’s normal to experience some tension and emotional distress within a marriage, you don’t want to let the scale tip too far the wrong way, or you’re at risk for more than just stress – psychologically as well as physically. Here are seven ways to strengthen your marriage:  More...Shine at Yahoo

One of the hardest things to do when one’s schedule is swamped with presentations and deadlines and lots of overtime is to lose weight. After all, the busy employee would not even have enough time to get his reports done, much less to get on an exercise bike to sweat out the extra calories he wolfed down during a high-stress lunch meeting! Also, the high-stress days usually call for extra food to calm the nerves, particularly for women professionals. But if you are that person, there is still a way to lose weight without stretching yourself too thin. The key is simply for you to know the basics in order to make the right food choices and incorporate motion naturally into your daily routine. The following guidelines should get you started on the right track to lose weight while still turning in a superb performance everyday:  More...medsavailable.com

MedsAvailableA Heavy Breakfast Spells Wonders For Your Health

Many people who want to lose weight try to pick which meals they feel they can skip in order to reduce their intake of calories, and breakfast and dinner are the two meals that most people skip. Some diets promote an after-six timeframe, wherein no food is taken in after six, but with today’s busy lifestyles that go well into the night, few people are actually successful with that. Instead, more people feel they have more willpower to skip breakfast, as they are usually in a hurry to get to work anyway so not having breakfast is usually much more convenient.
However, experts in weight loss insist on this one thing, and that is never to skip breakfast. Although it may sound contradictory to what you believe, as skipping that first meal sounds like a way to avoid the additional intake of calories, there are reasons why having a heavy breakfast may actually spell wonders for your weight loss goals: More....medsavailable.com
